AI Literacy Unplugged is a five-day, print-and-teach unit that takes middle schoolers from "what even is AI" all the way to "should we use it, and how." No logins. No student devices. No prep beyond hitting print. It works even in the classrooms where AI tools are blocked, because the whole thing runs on paper, conversation, and hands-on activities.
 
This is not a lecture about AI. Students program a human "robot" and watch it glitch, train a pretend machine and discover where bias sneaks in, fact-check a confident AI that is confidently wrong, out-write a chatbot using a prompting method they will actually remember, and debate the real ethical questions AI raises. Each day builds on the last, so the week tells one connected story instead of five disconnected worksheets.
 
The five-day arc:
Day 1: What Is AI, Really? Students give step-by-step instructions to a literal "robot" partner and learn that computers do exactly what you say, not what you mean.
Day 2: How Do Machines Learn? Students train a classifier using example cards and discover firsthand how biased data leads to biased results.
Day 3: When AI Gets It Wrong. Students fact-check a confident AI answer against real sources and learn the habit that matters most: confidence is not accuracy, so verify.
Day 4: Talking to Machines. A too-literal Prompt Genie grants exactly what students ask, and they learn the WISH method for writing prompts that actually work.
Day 5: Should We? The Ethics of AI. A Four Corners debate and a graded one-pager help students reason through the human questions AI raises, with a full rubric included.
